That should be a big nudge to drive people to Linux.
There has been little progress in desktop performance in the last 10 years, IMHO. Most of the "improvements" are related to the addition of TPM, and video.

Any PC of the last 10 years on Linux runs as if it was a newly purchased. I know -- I run dozens of them in all sorts of capacities.

But, Window is easy, they say, so to the trash they go.

I've been using Win11 for a couple of years now and I must say that it's far superior to Win10 ... But I've had it with Mr Gate's blood-sucking monster.

Microsoft's tendency now is to follow Apple's model of a closed eco-system ... they want to redirect all app purchases to their store. They've been slowly doing it in the last few years, They intend to trap the users into and endless spin of monthly payments for the rest of their natural lives. Nobody will "own" software anymore, everyone's going to have to pay a rent now.

That is why I'm watching this thread very closely. I intend to migrate to Linux in the next couple of years at most, and I want to know what to expect. What the learning curve looks like and all ...

Why not just find a 10 year old discarded box or laptop and install Ubuntu?

Try it out. You might like it.

I'll help if you need it.

From a DL380 GEN9 workstation in the house connected to the 10GB speed ethernet home backbone connected to the HPE DL360 GEN8 Linux firewall and NAT. This server handles handles IP security cams, media services and various basic computing requirements.
Gateway server. Look at the load average, she is busy 24/7. 12 real processors with the Intel hyper-thread processor crap turned off for extra security. https://superuser.com/questions/1402079/understanding-load-average-and-cpu-in-linux

With the solar panel utility power offset (with time shifting battery bank for night) and dedicated 400W of panels for the rack, the total rack utility power is under 100Wh (shifting to net positive in bright sun) average usage in normal sun.

Power without solar.

You're not into mining, are you Spook?
Seriously, I've been building long term post retirement projects in computing systems and renewable energy systems to keep the mind and body busy. Lots of people buy/lease an EV to switch from Fossil Fuels to electrical energy for various reasons. It's sizable investment that's good IMO in the long term. Me, I've got completely paid for, efficient and low emissions vehicles that I don't see any (science based) reason to replace, so I'm making much the same long term investment in solar, energy banks, and computing system to design, simulate and implement software and hardware to move much of my energy needs off-grid for the long term instead.
