Met with my contractor yesterday. He was in a suit. Just attended one of his friend's funerals. Died from Covid.

Dawn Wells died yesterday from Covid. Age 82. Dawn played Maryann on Gilligan's Island.

Two days ago a newly elected Congressman died from Covid. He was in his 40's. No pre-existing conditions were known.

Too many people dying and too little leadership.

Please do not let these sad events to corner you in dispair. From my time going at sea, I found a way to overcome high stress in moments of danger: just think of something that really pleases you. With our vessel in extremely heavy weather I used to visualize my kids and wife or the sea in calm and sunny weather. Kind of looking ahead being able to see what I will have when things improved. Bad moments always have an end.

Be well. Surely 2021 will give us better options and better moments.

2021. Woke up. Found US Politics still embroiled in controversy. Pandemic still raging. Racial Unrest. Climate going wild. Wild fires still a problem. Hospitals at or near capacity. Doctors having to decide who's worth saving. People still out of work. Unemployment (US) still a problem. People losing their homes (rentals and probably ownership as well). Kids still not sure if they're going to go to school or stay home with parents and on-line learning.

At least we have football (US version).

Humans love to gauge their progress in life using milestones.

  1. a baby's 1st birthday
  2. your child turning 18 (use any age you choose)
  3. your 25th, 50th anniversary
  4. passing the 13th mile (or 21km) in a marathon run
  5. losing weight to below 150 lb (or whatever is your target weight in stone or other milestone)

In reality, there is nothing special about a new year except the fact that the earth has completed one more revolution around the sun. (And who established when a revolution ends and another begins?)

For me, I don't get excited about celebrating anniversaries. If there is one thing I prefer to celebrate is each day, waking up in the morning and celebrating that I made it to see another day.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Enjoy it!

And who established when a revolution ends and another begins?
Early in America's history (I think) someone wanted to make April 1st the first of the year. Those who subscribed to that thinking were called "April Fools". Thus, the birth of April Fool's day. Maybe it was somewhere in Europe this started.

For me, as a child I always thought of winter as the three coldest months and summer the three hottest months. Spring and Fall in between. I never understood why winter started at the winter solstice.

How would you explain that to our comrades down south?
(I meant on the other hemisphere. I can never understand why North is up and South is down.)

As this is off topic,
I feel OK to have a rant.

A few things first,

I go to church and am active in the community,
so to me tomorrow is always going to be better,

18 months ago I was diagnosed with 12 weeks to live.
Long story, but things turned out better , but I am still left with a terminal situation, they just don't know when.
So to me every day is a good day.

2020 was absolute sh1T ..

but in perspective,

cancer. Just in the US, around 500 thousand people die per year,
The world survives

The flu at the end of WW1, killed at least 50 million, probably many 100 million,
the world survived.

Bubonic plague, is still rampant in the world. Even with treatment the death rate is 10 %
The black death in Europe killed around 40% of the population,
even now , in the US there are around 10 cases of bubonic plague per year,
the world survived.

So far , from CV19, there have been around 2 Million deaths world wide,
we are on track to have around 3 Million.

The world birth rate is around 500 Thousand per day,
As an engineer, 3 million is less than a weeks output of babies.....

2020 has been a Sh1t Year,
we have all lost loved ones,
the situation has been handled terribly by the governments of the world,
the only ones who will come out of this well are Phizer who are on track to make a fortune,

One day I hope the truth about how the pandemic was handled will come out,

how the US government interfered in drug trials, to the advantage of US companies,

how the warnings and scientific advise were ignored due to short term thinking by all governments,
particularly the UK government.
I wonder which politicians have shares in Phizer.

How China seems amazingly to not have had a Cv19 death since I think Easter,
Will we ever find where the virus original came from, ( seems the suspected cave is no longer there )

But I doubt it will happen, certainly not in my or my kids life times,

So another year comes to an end,
the earth does not care, it carries on, today is just the same as yesterday , as is tomorrow.

Well get through it
A little different, a little wiser till the world forgets,
who knows, shaking of hands in the west might go out of favour replaced with my eastern friends small bow
( feet together and pointing at the person opposite ! )

I wish all the readers and contributors here the best of up coming years,
keep being kind and courteous to each other
remember every on e has an opinion,
some are better than others at making a point, or even understanding how to ask questions,

the world will be a better place.

may your God go with you

The year 2020 was another year passing. It was a good year or a bad year depending on your perspective.
When lockdown happened in early spring a lot of good things happened.

  1. People got out of their cars and walked
  2. Air pollution decreased globally
  3. Parents spent more time with their children
  4. Total strangers said "hello" from across the street
  5. People were compassionate and considerate
  6. Alcohol distilleries shifted production to making hand sanitizers
  7. Manufacturers repurposed their production line to make toilet paper, PPE and ventilators
  8. Many manufacturers donated their supplies to where they were needed most
  9. Society consumed less and trashed the planet less
  10. People devoted their time and energies to helping others in need

Pandemic or no pandemic, Earth will survive.
The question is, will humanity survive?
People die every day for various reasons. Can the health care system cope with a sudden surge of cases? Health care workers are infected at alarming rates and are stressed and burned out.

Perhaps this is Mother Earth's way of saying "enough is enough".
