Inverter and converter

Hi ,while i am reading about inverter circuits i came across these two circuits...I am really confused were these two same in functioning or different..what i know is AC-AC ,DC-DC converters,,AC-DC (or) DC- AC is an inverter

They function the same way as DC-to-AC inverters, except that the switching devices are BJTs in the first circuit and MOSFETs in the second circuit.

It is my understanding that 'converter' is a general term embracing both DC-to-DC and DC-to-AC devices, whereas 'inverter' originally applied specifically to DC-to-AC devices. But both terms are loosely applied these days.
