Where is that expressed in the document ? I could not discern.

Higher resistance = higher gain

Figure 3. The volume control pin outputs a current (70 micro-amps). The resistor to ground sets the voltage which controls the gain, Figure 3.

It wasn't spelled out. I started with Fig.3 and backed it out.

Which resistor in figure 7 are you talking about?

Lower resistance = lower gain. I think gain is more related to voltage in from the pot. Using a different resistance pot will give the same gain. But as the slider moves down the pot (lower resistance) you get lower gain.
