My initial response is that this is wrong, but I have a hard time finding a way to argue it. Religion (specifically the various branches of Christianity, incl Catholicism) has been losing it's grip on America. According to a poll posted earlier in this thread, <50% of Americans believe in the creationist view. And the result is an increase in things which are viewed as immoral through a Christian lens. Divorce is up, marriage is down. Homosexuality is up, and pedophiles are starting to speak out about their "rights" as well. Feminism has entrained itself across the board. From a Christian standpoint, it's "going to hell in a handbasket." So there is the proof of your argument, and these examples are just the tip of the iceberg.
This part gets to a thought of mine that can't be proven. The world seems to be getting more and more 'evil' for the lack of a better word. This is because of things like anti abortion, better medical care, etc. The reason why it's getting more 'evil' is because of reincarnation. Now I explain that. There were only "x" number of 'souls' present at the beginnings of human life. Reincarnation just kept 'recycling' those original 'souls'. As we got better at extending life, more and more humans are born without a soul. The unprovable 'soul' is what keeps us from being 'evil'. Again just my take on this.

To strantor and the mods thank you all for this thread! Things I've thought and wondered about but had no one willing to converse with are in this thread.

This Thread seemingly just gets more interesting for me. Just last night my half Native American Friend, his mother Cherokee. Spent his life as a Master Mechanic his Father a Marine serving in WWII was blessed with a loving Relationship with his parents and very close to each other. We sat for a few hrs talking spirituality and the relationship of what he calls Mother Earth, for years he never spoke about it, only now can he speak about it, it caught him by surprise when I told him how I was raised just like him his Father Taught him to fight like a John Wayne father but, it was only to protect and not to harm, but his Father told him openly he loved him. The difference was my Father couldn't tell me he loved me and finally after he remarried after my Mothers death my Step Mom made him aware that his treatment with me which was not Fatherly but rather distain and horrible.

So, when we speak of God the Creator many say how could he be so horrible to allow people to victimize each other, why would he not within his power stop the violence or is he actively hurting us willingly by not showing his love openly. But, what I've found through this process and at age 52 my Father finally found the courage to tell me he loved me. He showed love but, couldn't openly say it, I always knew he did without words he couldn't protect me but, he could teach me. I guess you could say, if someone just gives you something without earning it we can't appreciate it, when I finish a project I become sad because true happiness is in the pursuit of happiness then I ask myself if their is a God wouldn't he keep me guessing about him not allowing me to fully know him or would he keep dropping bread crumbs and lead me to my own understanding of the World and Universe around me.

If the "soul" (whatever that means) is unprovable, how did you determine:
1) that it exists
2) that there were only "X" number of them
3) that some people are born without this undefined unprovable thing

And your evidence for reincarnation?

Interesting take - or perhaps you have to "earn a soul" and people are focusing on the wrong things now being selfish and living just for material things and therefore never get one...

I'm not sure if crime coincides with what you consider "evil," but if so, crime has dropped significantly in the past decade+.

I'm glad you brought up abortion; it's another of the things in my list that confound the Golden Rule.
It has come to normalcy in a way that pedophilia hopefully never will.

This would make for a very difficult discussion... abortion and anti-abortion zealots....

Before speaking of any act as "evil" one should always realize that life is not black and white... Abortion does not happen in the void.

I actually find it unbelievable that you can put abortion and paedophelia in the same category. You see, sometimes, abortion is a choice one makes out of love, but of course this is where religion comes in, take your suffering, it is good for you... Isn't interesting that many animals can control the amount of offspring they have based on environmental conditions?

Here is someone who speaks very well on the subject. Before speaking of any act as "evil" one should always realize that life is not black and white... Abortion does not happen in the void.

I did seem to put them in the same category, and for some people they are in the same category. My point however, the correlation I tried to establish between them, is that they both are hard to navigate with the golden rule.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" means different things to different people, depending on whether they consider an unborn baby among "others."

You know what I think ?
Some day science is gonna prove aliens exist.
Some day science is gonna prove supernatural beings exist.

Question is, Will I see that "Day" ?
If your religion proves true, then yes. It will be confirmed on your last day.;)

Does that mean, " Treat them how they treated you " ?

If so, that's not how I feel.
No, that is not what it means. What you've described is called the silver rule, and it's a pasive one. The golden rule is proactive: "do onto others what you want others to do onto you" ... see the difference?

Yes, but the trick is that, once again, life is not black and white... For example, there is a trend in surrogacy getting more and more popular while children die in foster care. Good or bad? Thousands are spent on fertility treatmnents, while yet again, children die in foster care...
