helo every one! iam hoping to start on working on my project...improved traffic lighting system......for my country. we often have problems during rush hours. any kind of contribution please, to make it a success!!

 

Since few of us are clairvoyant you need to tell us what the problem is with the traffic lights.

 

Roundabouts?

 

bicycles....

 

Automobiles...?? Pedestrians...??

In all seriousness, in order to solve a problem everyone involved has to know what the particular problem is.

Can't you just use the system some other country uses?
Are motorists in your country likely to obey traffic lights or ignore them?

 

Just heard an article on NPR about a study of the new visual and audible intersection pedestrian controls. The ones with the countdown displays and the aural instructions about Walk/Don't Walk. It seems that the pedestrian/car accidents are down...but...the car/car accidents went up. It appears that motorists approaching the intersection watch the counter display and will speed up anticipating the change. They assume that the motorist sitting at the light will also be jack-rabbiting as soon as the light changes. More rear-enders. There's always a cloud behind that silver lining.

I've heard about countdown timers that show how long the Yellow light lasts until the Red for the traffic that had the Green light, and that seemed to reduce Red light running. Another thing that seems to reduce Red-light running is increasing the duration of the Yellow.

Conversely, shortening the yellow increases revenue from those red-light cameras. Many towns were looking for a good revenue stream from their camera installations, but when residents complained about the shortened yellows, and the town relented to the normal yellow time, the revenue projections evaporated.
