He said that that realization nearly made him physically ill and sickened him so much that he pulled off the first chance he got and threw his radar detector in the trash at a gas station.

You have a friend of high value there... to most people, the actual sin is to be caught in the act, and not the act itself... it's part of the human condition. Corrupt cops (and there are many where I live) think that their position is not one of service to the community, but rather a license to abuse the law itself, as if their badges represented a get out of jail for free card... And on the other hand, ordinary citizens want to live in a clean and orderly place, but are unwilling to follow the rules that they feel were designed to repress rather than help them.. and unfortunately in some cases they're right... it's a very ugly vicious circle

 

Agreed. A useful radar detector is not a DIY project. You need a design and a build using the latest state of the art, which these days includes lasers. Otherwise the cat will catch your mouse.

The front end is nothing more than a feedhorn and an EHF diode, smooth the output of that with a capacitor and you can do the rest with an op-amp as lowly as the 741.

Whatever they're using, it beats my 10 year old radar detector. A cop picked off the car that passed me and I never got a beep.
I did not bother to install a power line for the radar detector when I moved into my latest car.

 

I should have said "a useful speed trap detector..." You're right that merely detecting radar is not so hard.
