I can "see" infrared light!

Well not naturally! If you take a digital camera and point a IR light source (like a remote control for example) towards the camera lens, while looking at the LCD viewfinder the camera picks up the IR light when you push a button. :D

also works with a camera phone

For your own curiosity look at Thermography and Thermographic Cameras - can your camera see how hot the chicken is cooking in the oven?!

So if I can see the IR light from my video camera, does that mean I can make a IR light and shoot in total darkness?

I was thinking about this the other day.

I wanted to hook up 20 IR LEDs and see if I could make a night camera light.

What you are proposing to build is an infrared illuminator.

See the attachment for an example of a commercial version.

I work in a very dimly lit casino bar, there are many infrared LED illuminators like the ones that picture and cameras around the bar. I guess that would explain how the casino is able to watch the bar even thought it's relatively dark in there.

The next chance you get, aim your cellphone camera at one of those puppies and you will really see some light.
