Maybe 30 years ago I saw something about hostile trespass, "perfecting" a title after x number of years. I don't know if it was merely an easement like a dirt road or some amount of land like a squatter's cabin. Not much help, but it's a clue.

It varies by state and can be absurdly in favor of the squatter. If someone squats in your home and they make it through one night with their clothes there, they begin to gain rights. It's rare but a genuine risk when you go on vacation. Someone can basically squat in your home and by the time you return, you can't get back into your own home. This topic came up here in the past.

In Ohio, this can happen if you ask a girl to live with you. You then can't get her thrown out of the house.
