The previous time plugging it in may have caused the short to the sheath. And then when you disconnected it you fixed it. There are materials for repairing ceramic stuff and that would allow you to insulate the connections in a heat-proof manner. And one place to find a bit of that high temperature insulated wire is in the heater element connections of a discarded electric stove. Possibly even a suitable mating connector, if you are really lucky.
