How do people overcome the USB Ethernet speed on Raspberry Pis for Clusters?

Hi, I'm thinking of building a cluster for educational purposes (Consisting of a Pi 2, Pi 3, Odroid Xu3, 2 Dell Inspiron 1545s and a Dell Precision), and I was wondering about the Pi's Ethernet. I read an article about benchmarking a 6 node bramble (https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/benchmarking-raspberry-pi-cluster/ ) and it seems like it takes more time to transfer data then it does to actually process it (or does this only really effect programs where the computations are short?). I was wondering if anyone had any issues with this and how they dealt with it? Thanks!
