How AI thinks about electronics.

I have been seeing pictures like this all around the internet. Look carefully. The breadboard is messed up, the LED circuit is backwards (not to mention that the LED's arrows are pointing inwards not outwards), the voltage divider has odd markings around it (even though to its credit it did get the equation right), and there is a wire going right into the breadboard. AI is that it is just an algorithm that is good at finding patterns in the circuits that they see. In this case AI saw millions of breadboard circuits and smudged them all together into this odd circuit. It changed its mind several times like on the breadboard it mixed up resistors with jumpers.
everything you wrote also applies to humans....

what is wrong with breadboard? my breadboards are used not just for circuit that is tested but also as storage for recently used parts. this offers quick access to commonly used parts. mess is natural order of things.

what is wrong with wiring LED backwards? this is a learning kit so how else does one learn if not by trying everything? and connecting LED backwards to see results is one of first lessons. arrows beside LED suggest that is used not to emit light but to sense light.

what is wrong with wire going right into breadboard? i never made single breadboard circuit (or any other circuit for that matter) without wires connecting the it. and trust me... i made some circuits.

btw. humans are also learning by observing patterns. some people still cannot see patterns even when countless samples are provided. smudged image is advertisement, meant to draw attention. it clearly caught yours. i would not rely anything created by marketing department (human or AI) as technical reference.

the more important (and completely ignored part) is what is the offer:
what is inside it
is it a good value
does it include only collection of parts or also documentation... if documentation is included why don't we judge it for its content instead of by what appears in the ads? based on what is see in that image is that this is only a resistor kit so no documentation is needed

Except if you are playing chess; AI is terrible at that. Worse than any blindfolded GM.
someone missed another pattern... that was a metaphor. playing chess is not the same discipline as making circuits and GM in this case was human not AI. only humans have eyes.

I agree. I was not talking about the kit itself but pointing out the fact that people are mindlessly asking AI to make adds.

Perhaps. But as soon as you look at the picture itself you see problems that would never happen with humans.

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Though it does have the inverse property to sense and produce power by light, you might as well use another name other then LED for that circuit. Solar panels are used to produce power so if you have a circuit that powers a solar panel in stead of getting powered by it could you call it a solar panel battery charger? I think calling it a solar panel LED circuit would be more appropriate just like in this case calling it a light sensing LED circuit would be so much better. I do see the point about trial and error but this is like asking a experienced engineer to make a picture and you trust it so much as to not even look at the picture. Was AI trying to demonstrate trial and error?

AIs don't need eyes. They, just like us "scan" a picture. They can "see" it just as well as us. The problem is their inability to see the "big idea". They should be able to do this stuff. If we gave them eyes it would not help. It would be like an amazingly smart kid with disabilities. Imagine asking him to draw a color picture of this product in a typical situation and he draws this! Or he can't even understand 3d shapes even though he memorizes everything on the internet. It is very strange.

Already fully capable in math and programming.

Leaps and strides have been made over the span of weeks. I predicted 2026 was to be the year of competent, capable general AI (or, at least the knee in the curve). There are two months left. Lot's can happen.

I have met people like that, some were in upper management positions.
It's been my experience too - if a person is incompetent as an assembler (unionized) they can't be fired so they get promoted into positions where they can do less harm. I've worked for quite a few like that. The biggest example of this is when I worked for MacDonnell Douglas. My boss didn't know one end of a wire from the other. Yet he was in charge of the electrical systems on the DC-10 line. If not for the competence of the assemblers those planes would have never gotten off the ground.

And yes, I'm a big fan of the DC-10. Poor maintenance practices have been linked to some of the worst crashes that have occurred. But this thread is not about aircraft it's about AI.

i totally disagree, humans are hilarious and so many are idiots that do stupidest things and fail in most miserable ways. that is what keeps Youtube etc alive.

does not need to be powering circuit, it is enough to sense light, power can come from other sources.
any PN junction can be photo sensor as seen in clip below and many other (line follower etc).
if you google "led as sensor" there will be countless hits..

those that experimented troubleshooted are very familiar not just intended operation but also various corner cases, failure modes and hacks.
an audio amplifier getting mains noise injected because glass body diodes saw the flicker of light in the room.
and they are not just used by ill informed, even NASA made the data acquisition system that used purposely "miswired" BJTs.
some (like NASA) used BJTs in reverse because the collector-emitter saturation voltage (Vce_sat) can actually be lower in reverse mode, which was used to create highly precise analog choppers or switches in early telemetry and data-logging gear.
today we have wider selection of better specs parts so this is no longer needed, but those who don't experiment, don't learn.
as a kid eager to learn i was (and continue to this day) to take things apart to see what makes them tick, abuse them till they fail etc.
i recommend to try different things and learn what to expect. such experience is invaluable because it makes you think rather than reading/listening of experiences of others.

'She' is a bot, so clearly doesn't feel pain. Holding the iron near the tip gives more precise control over tip position.
as a kid i was having fun and making money by repairing video games, pinball machines and what not. one day i was in a room full of arcade equipment just unloaded from a truck. so i started working on things i could access without waiting for someone to move them. my soldering iron was hangin over the side of open pinball. friend that came over to watch was sort of absent minded, hypnotised or confused - he did see the smoke rising from the iron but did not connect the dots. so he reaches for the very tip with two fingers and lifts it up. i was stunned by the scene. after long time his brain eventually registered pain and his mouth was opening to scream. i said "nooo" like "are you crazy/what are you doing". but he was really off that day and must have interpreted it as something else, maybe "don't throw it"? he never explained. he closed his mouth and gently set the burning iron where it was... :eek:

But if you google "led circuit" very few answers would be a circuit with an led as a sensor. The AI labeled it LED circuit, I would at least expect further explanation. Even if it is true that it was trying to make a LED sensor circuit then it failed. That is not a correct LED sensor circuit. This is not what to expect from a machine that has access to the entire internet. I agree that some people have done some really strange stuff but WHO WOULD DRAW THIS PICTURE? Who would draw so well with such realistic things, really good 3d image, get the voltage divider equation right: Vout = Vin x R1/R1+R2, get the exact number of points on a breadboard, and then just scribble some resistors on the breadboard in random spots. I am telling you, nobody. Sure maybe if you gave this problem to Leonardo da Vinci, or the Pixar team, and told them to also add problems they could make it. This AI is out of this world.

dude, let it go... you started thread to talk about something you did not like - fine. but then your post does not even have a link to the real thing, so nobody can check where that image came from or what is it really for and what it costs. so no way to determine value. that is a fail in its own right, yet but you complain about mistakes and errors of others. if all you want is to rant and complain about some ad image that rubbed you wrong way, i can understand. there is tons of things out there and marketing material that is less than perfect. the way i see it, probably some poor bastard trying to make a buck is betting everything on his shoestring business on amazon, temu or aliexpress, and trying to make the offer look nice. so he asked for AI to make up something. he may not even know what he is selling. his job is salling, not designing circuits. he probably has no clue if the image is right nor not. and that something that you did not like is not even in the kit which you probably did not even buy. and if you think that AI generated marketing material is more distorted than human created one, i have some island to sell you. AI makes mistakes because it does not understand enough. humans do the same to deceive intentionally.

While I can boast I've never done that - I have done something totally absent minded. I worked the night shift cleaning the main lodge. Come morning - end of my shift - I went into the kitchen and took a plate and a box of cornflakes. I poured the cornflakes on to the plate. I was about to pour the milk but then realized - this isn't going to work. The plate is too shallow for the milk and flakes. My friends all had a good laugh over that. One guy - Pete - didn't know what was so funny so, since this was a church camp and lodge we all started calling him "The Pete that passeth all understanding". That was back in 76. I wonder where he is or if he's even alive. Probably but only by dumb luck. Oh, did you know there's a "B" in "Dumb"? I wonder what AI would have to say about that; the Dumb has a B in it.
