High channel count data acquisition system

We are looking to set up a 256 channel data acquisition system at reasonable cost but haven't found a solution. There seem to be either reasonable cost 64 channel boards or high end chassis based modular systems. Basic requirements are:
- 16 bit (12 is the low limit if other parameters can't be met)
- 2.5V voltage input (somewhat flexible)
- greater than 1000 samples per second per channel
- 10kHz analog bandwidth or better
- Decent user interface, preferably a GUI (no coding or very little required)
- Timestamped or synchronized acquisition if it is built from multiple units

Any suggestions are welcome.

Those two requirements are not compatible if the analog bandwidth is per channel.
The Nyquist sampling theorem states the the sample rate must be at least twice the highest signal frequency of interest to reconstruct the analog waveform.

So 1000 samples per second can capture an analog data bandwidth of no more than 500Hz.

Alternately, for a 10kHz analog bandwidth, the sample rate would need to be at least 20k samples/sec per channel.
