I've got an IRFI9Z34G to get hooked up and I'm not finding any info in the datasheet on what pin is what. It's in a TO-220 case so I'm assuming it's similar to a TIP in that the source is in the middle and on the mounting tab. Gate would be pin 1 and Drain on pin 3?

Holding it with the printing readable, the pins are numbered from left to right, 1, 2, 3.
The tab is terminal 4.
1 = GATE
2 = DRAIN
3 = SOURCE
4 = DRAIN

See the attached excerpt from International Rectifier's datasheet. Note the "LEAD ASSIGNMENTS" table on the far right, and the small numbers on the left drawing of the TO220 package.

It's easy to overlook.

Careful, that component is sensitive to static electricity discharges.

Thanx guys, but we were too late for the 1st one! LOL! I had the Source and the Drain reversed and it shorted right out. It's OK tho. I got more and now I know .....

I don't know where I downloaded this stinkin' datasheet from but it doesn't say a thing about pin out. I did a print on the sheet Sarge sent and stapled it on. Good to go now.
