Hey!! Dave I just got back
See the pic , zoom in and see the circle marked in white. In the below pic i have marked 1,2 and 3. If I am not mistaken these are the Pads showing zero resistance to the PSU_ON pin. Verify me this again. Just to be sure and reply. And also check for zero ohms between each pad too, the sooner the better.
God my upload is so slow

Oh dear...u are confusing me. Do you have msn.
If from the pads and pin is zero, then there is no way you'll get infinite across the pads.
It's illogical. Don't you think

I mean I measure from the psu_on pin to each marked solder pad from your image and get 0 ohms.

Then I tested each tiny resistor with a probe at each side and get 1 on the multimeter.

come away what do u mean. You must pressing too hard on the chip
be careful. too much pressure is not good, use a fine tip if you can

R!f@@ - I really do appreciate the amount of time and patience you've given but I'm dealing with components I can only just see, let alone carefully measure!

The resistor on the left of the board has come off. It measures approx 2mm by 0.75mm and I cannot get any other reading from it except 1 on the DMM. If I try to make better contact the bloody thing flicks up and onto the carpet. After 5 mins I find it and it does it again! The probes on my meter are about 1.5mm with a triangular point. Grr!

I've sent the newer board back as a RMA so may get lucky.

LMAOF.... You have mistaken me. If you can solder it. do it.
Here is little trick I have learned. Get a long thin needle, the one used in hand sewing. Tie it in the positive meter probe with a bare copper wire, a single strand of net work cable will do fine. wrap surround it tight and put some tape , now you got pointy probe, careful with the pressure.
And when I said across the pads I have marked 1,2 and 3. Not across the chip.
I think you did not check the pic. be patient. it takes time. just be in a well lit place and a magnifying glass, if possible get some one to hold it.
One more thing, the chocolate once are chip capacitors.
I'll posting another pic after a quick meal. be on line.
and no need to thank me so much, I enjoy helping others.

See the pic. zoom in to see the detail marking .
U can see a transistor that I have traced, by looking at the pic I traced the connection to it, I need you to correct me, check from the PSU_ON pin to the tr
Do zero resistance check to each of the 3 pins, they are collector emitter and base, most likely connection will be to the C, the lone one to your left, collector is always alone.
If you get a zero resistance, then this is the transistor use to switch on the supply. from there we can go on.

R!f@@ - I need to get a smaller soldering iron and a magnifying glass!

I'll try to pick them up tomorrow morning and then post back! You are right that I didn't notice your numbers! Doh! :D

Expensive equipment with out proper equipment in place to do job,
excellent computer pictures, with diagrams or equipment to work on high tech eguipment. The pictures should show ,voltage, waveforms and other Information before changing part,Most factory just change out the board or whole unit.
Have sent $ 250.00 in advance and never had trouble with sony.Have done
this three times ,very good. Internet warranty seems to work well from start to
finish thanks to pick -up and delivery services.THe word over night has become
an Icon.

If you decide this transistor is faulty remember you do not have to replace with an SM type.

It may look ugly but a TO92 mounted instead is a deal safer and easier.
