how do i determine the "load" resistor in a given circuit?

why did he chose the resistor parallel to the voltage sources as the "load" resistor.

Load is chosen by yourself, which element of the circuit that you want to calculate its current/voltage using thevenin method.

 

As has already been stated, the load resistor is that resistor in the circuit that is the object of your analysis. The load impedance is typically, though not always, an impedance that has one end referenced to ground.

In the example circuit to which you linked, the author chose the 2 ohm resistor as the target of his analysis.
