If you've got some electronics kit, try the some of the experiments in the e-book. All the circuits in Chapter 3 are pretty simple for a beginner, and you can use the e-book to supplement your knowledge.

I was going to suggest a cork board, a paper-clip, 2 drawing pins, a battery, a resistor and a bulb!
