Ground wire length too small.

Hello all!
I was installing an appliance a few days ago. The appliance manual told me to hook the ground wire around a certain green screw. The problem is that the ground wire broke and is falling short by about 6 inches.

Can I just take a copper wire and attach one side of it to the ground wire and the other side to the green screw?
If yes, what gauge, material, kind of wire should I use?

I live in the US.
Thanks for the replies!

What is the appliance?
What is the voltage, current, wattage rating of the appliance?
What is the wire size of the existing ground wire?

Theoretically, there should be no current flowing in the ground wire.
#16-18 AWG solid or stranded wire will do in most situations.

If you use the same gauge as the existing ground wire it will be fine. Make sure your splice is mechanically and electrically secure.

@MrChips questions are quite pertinent, since the requirements depend on the type of appliance and its application (industrial, medical, high power things are much more stringent).

Given the ground wire is a protective connection, you must guarantee the connection is very well done, mechanically robust and with an appropriately sized gauge - the same or thicker wehn compared to the existing wire will be enough.

Use the same gauge and type of wire. You can use a wire nut or a crimp connector. Tradesmen call the connector a 410.

Ty 4 the reply.

The appliance is an InSinkErator Badger 5XL Non-corded 1/2-HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal

Voltage (Volts):120
Amperage (Amps): 6.3
Wattage: Unavailable
Disposal Horsepower 1/2-HP

Wire size of the existing ground wire is unknown.

The old and new appliance are the same exact model/company etc.

Thank you
