Were they still maintenance folks after that?

How about the supervisor who signed off on their work?
It wasn't my shop, so I don't know what the consequences were. A lot would depend on the specifics of who knew what when. If it was a 3-level (someone that is just out of tech school and in their first year or so in that position) that just grabbed the one can of anti-seize compound in the cabinet, it's possible that no one knew that the wrong compound had been used prior to the post-incident investigation. That would likely have resulted in required retraining for that technician and possibly the entire shop (or wider). If a 5-level or higher had suggested/approved it, then a stronger action would have been taken. A huge amount depends on how upfront and forthright the people were -- a lot gets forgiven if you make no attempt to cover anything up, but that goes away very quickly if you do. Maintenance activities learned through hard experience that excessive punishments for non-malicious actions is counter-productive to the goal of figuring out what actually happened and making changes to prevent it from happening again. Plus, there is the never-officially-acknowledged-but-widely-practiced principle that sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Cops were absolutely not allowed beyond the security gates at our Navy radio facility. They didn't even ask or try. They could make a report for traffic offenses that would be sent up the chain for possible action.
Guard refused to lift barrier. Did not close it.

DA and a judge decided it wasn't really worth it.

On this day (July 28), 1945, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed into the north side of the Empire State Building between the 79th and 80th floors while flying through thick fog over Manhattan on a routine personnel transport flight.

The plane, badly off course and with visibility near zero, clipped nearby buildings (almost hit the Chrysler Building) before slamming into the skyscraper at roughly 200 miles per hour, instantly killing the three aboard, as well as eleven people working inside the building. The impact tore a gaping hole in the structure, sent one of the plane's engines hurtling through the building and out the other side, and ignited a fire fueled by the aircraft's fuel tanks, while an elevator operator named Betty Lou Oliver survived a plummet of 75 stories after cables failed, setting a record for the longest survived elevator fall.

I first learned about this crash when I was in elementary school, probably third or fourth grade. Back then they had a book buying program and I would save up my allowance so that I could buy several books. One of them was about manmade disasters and it included this, the ship explosion in Halifax Harbor, the Texas City ship explosion, the Great Molasses Flood. and several others, Another book chronicled natural disasters. I still have most of those books and was able to compare them to the kinds of books that were available for kids when my daughter was the same age and the comparison was pretty stark -- virtually nothing that covered historical events in factual detail and nothing that presented specific descriptions of death and destruction. A couple decades ago I got curious and looked into the descriptions of the events based on modern information available online and was somewhat surprised how well those stories, intended for readers under ten years old, stood up as being extremely consistent with current understandings, indicating that they were quite well researched despite the target audience. Another thing that struck me as I was doing that was that they did not read like children's books, despite clearly be categorized on the spine as being targeted for that age range. It was the story about Texas City that introduced me to ammonium nitrate. The stories are written in a very engaging way, but are also quite educational. I'd love to see where they rate as far as reading level by today's standards.

WWI pilots didn't wear white silk scarves for fashion, or drink blackberry brandy for nerves. Both were desperate countermeasures against explosive, engine-induced diarrhea.

The culprit was the rotary engine. Early combat aircraft, like the Sopwith Camel and Nieuport 28, used rotary engines where the entire engine block spun rapidly around a stationary crankshaft along with the propeller.

This design provided an excellent power-to-weight ratio and self-cooled the cylinders, but it created a severe lubrication problem. Standard petroleum-based oil would dissolve in the fuel-air mixture that passed through the crankcase, seizing the engine.

The solution was castor oil. It retained its lubricating properties at high temperatures and wouldn't dissolve in gasoline. However, rotary engines used a total-loss lubrication system. As the engine spun at high speeds, centrifugal force flung the unburnt, boiling-hot castor oil straight out of the exhaust valves and into the slipstream as a fine, sticky mist.

The pilot sat in an open cockpit directly behind this spinning oil-sprayer. Breathing the mist and constantly swallowing the oil coating their lips over a two- or three-hour patrol gave them a massive, involuntary dose of a powerful natural laxative. The result was severe stomach cramps, nausea, and explosive diarrhea that would often hit mid-flight or immediately upon landing.

To survive this miserable side effect, pilots adopted countermeasures that eventually became romanticized aviation staples. They needed a rag to constantly wipe the sticky castor oil off their goggles so they could see. Standard cloth would scratch the glass or mica lenses over time, whereas silk was soft enough to clean the goggles without ruining them. To protect their uniforms from the constant spray of foul-smelling oil, pilots wore heavy leather coats tightly belted at the waist and oversized gauntlets.

The final line of defense was dietary. Back on the ground, officers' messes were heavily stocked with blackberry brandy or blackberry cordial. Blackberries are naturally rich in tannins, which act as a powerful astringent to counteract diarrhea. It was the prescribed medical countermeasure to stop the laxative effects of the castor oil they had just spent hours ingesting.

Washington has been operating in the South China Sea and recently finished a port call in Da Nang, Vietnam. Lincoln deployed in November and was sent to the Middle East in January ahead of the U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran. The carrier took part in the bombing campaign and blockade of Iranian ports. The ship has gone about 200 days without a port call. Aircraft carrier crew members normally get port visits every 30 to 45 days, though operational needs can disrupt those plans.
We were 100 days in the gulf without a port call in 1980, I can't imagine double that. Godspeed on a safe trip home.
