I know you described this as an “option”, but to further emphasize my point, I refuse to look at any page in “Dark Mode”. I just cannot read it, so don’t even bother to try.
Well that is your choice. Twitter one of the highest use platforms went to dark mode as an option several months back.
I wrote my own text editor a long time ago and changed the text to white on a pure black background. I'll show images later in the thread.

Definition:

"Might" would clearly be appropriate. You have not stated any case for "should" except your own preferences. It's like black on white. :)
Not sure what you are getting at.

*IF* there is a dark mode implemented *THEN* there *SHOULD* be an option to go back to non dark mode. What is so hard to understand about that statement?

Here is a screenshot of my editor...
This has to be viewed with NO ZOOM to see it as it really appears.
That might mean that you have to download it and view it in a drawing program to see it the way it really appears when using it because the forum software may not display it right on all monitors.

Actually that's not really true. Tablets have been doing it for a long time and it is starting to trend for other devices too.
Black on white has been around for 40,000 years (i.e., cave markings). Tablets, like cuneiform (white on white), have been around for about 4,000 years. If you mean modern tablets, they have been around for less than 40 years. I vote for what has a greater history of working well.

How so?
I believe the first tablet was not available well after the introduction of first Mac in 1984.
That argument does not seem to follow from the previous statements.
A tablet does not have to be around since 1984 to be classified as being around for a long time.
The question is, why do tablets do it, and why did Twitter switch.

Yes well that would be your option in a world where both options were always available.
But im sure you dont want to prevent EVERYONE ELSE from having that option do you? Unless of course you are the leader in a dictator type country. Or do you want to force everyone to your standards?
Maybe you can try to sue Twitter :)

You can always highlight the text by holding your mouse button and dragging it over the text.

That changes the black text to white on a dark background. You can also change the highlight to any desired color.

What previous statements?
You saying my statement was "not really true" does not follow from my statement in post #12.
I think maybe you were joking, but it sounded like you were implying that it would be erroneous to go to a dark mode since that must have been abandoned for a good reason.
But you know, i first saw a black on white display long long time ago and when i saw it i thought i would never like that because the "white" part is way too bright. It shines in our eyes the whole time we are reading the black text. I think that is what i dont like about it.
My TRS80 (ha ha ha) had green lettering on dark background. I loved it :)

Yes i have done that, but unfortunately the entire background does not change only the highlighted back of the text line. It does not get rid of that annoying white always shining through. I'd have to copy and paste it into my text editor which has white on black or the option to set the text to any color and the background to any color.
Thanks though.

A long time ago when I began reading, books and newspapers were black print on a white background. I expect that today.
Hi,

Oh yeah but we are talking computer monitors here really not printed text.
I think i have to agree that black on white is better for printed text but it would be interesting to see a book with white on black. Would certainly take a lot of ink though (ha ha).
Some good books like physics books have different color text on different color backgrounds for different reasons like an inset to illustrate something important.
