I have just wired 1 switch for a light, and one for the connected fan fallowing a diagram. Now both switches turn on light and fan simultaneously. Having trouble finding the error..

Doesn't sound like it..... thanks for the advice anyway.
Your diagram was wrong or you did it wrong.
You simply need a "hot" wire into both switches and the output of one switch goes to fan and the output of the other goes to light.
A switch just disconnects one leg of the circuit (hot and neutral).. usually the "hot" is switched for safety but it's done incorrectly to many times to count..
