Body slammed, with two broken legs, but still able to make those shoots count. Hoping for a fast and full recovery.

Lately, he’s been bugging his parents not for a new video game or an upgraded phone but for a mainstay of their own childhoods: a bicycle. He wants to hang out with the new friends he’s made at school on the weekends.

Not surprising. The isolating effects of excessive phone (and tablet or whatever) use have been documented repeatedly for decades now.

Where I first saw it was well over two decades ago when I was at the mall food court having lunch and across from me was a table of ten to twelve high-school age girls that had obviously come to the mall for the day. But there was no interaction (or so it seemed). Every single one of them was sitting there texting on their phone. For over half an hour, not a single word was spoken at that table. But, eventually, I realized that one of them was occasionally texting one of the others at the table, sometimes the person right next to them or across from them. I could tell because two of them would look up at each other and giggle or do something else that made it clear. I finally came to the conclusion that these girls were so enmeshed with their damn phones that the only way they could communicate with someone sitting a couple feet away was to break into their world via text messages. It was sad. Here they were, all gathered together to enjoy a day with each other, and they might as well have been in different time zones.

What we called "Digital Monks". Off in their own little world... Another digital affect on society has been that many kids cannot interpret an analog watch face to tell time. And cursive writing is no longer taught at most schools.
