I don't really know how the systems get power when the bulbs are lit, but I do know that the minimum bulb wattage is 25, so perhaps there is enough voltage drop across the system to power it.That never occurred to me.
Seems rather odd.
So how does it get power when the bulbs are lit?
You could perhaps wire across the bulb with a resistor to provide sufficient power to the circuit (probably could be a fairly high resistance), allowing the use of LEDs.
As far as jury rigging the systems, that is out of the question.
