The leased transponders are usually beamed only to the paid coverage area. So a bird even if it's in your line of sight might not be seen by your dish.

I can vouch for this. A bit of rain or just bad weather, and the signal is lost very quickly, within 10 seconds or so it goes from perfect to a blocky mess. Problem is, hydrogen absorbs a lot of microwave band signals.

I almost never watched TV, until I was forced into retirement. Now between TV and internet I am highly addicted to both

With a good 1M ku band dish you won't have rain fade or go C band, it's what the cable company uses to get their channels on the wire.

Ever read the Red Tape Cronicles? They have had some very unkind things to say about satellite providers. They use a lot of the same dirty tricks that the cell phone providers use.

Mostly it is in the form of gotchas. Automatic renewal, failure to opt out, those kind of tricks. When I get a chance I'll see if I can look it up again.

Many of these companies seem to think customer service is customer serviced.

I used to put up satellite dishes for a living, most of the time I go round and put up a dish, drill a hole through the wall, fix the cabling, install the satellite box.
One time I got there and the guy had 3 dishes in his garden, all remote controlled for direction. The biggest was about 2 meters. He had loads of receivers, but not the latest Sky one.

Because of the new HD channels added bandwidth requirements all the sat providers have launched new birds in the last few years with much better transponders than just a few years ago. This means almost no fade with normal sized dishes now. I've never had a long term contract with them and only lease receivers so I can bail out with just a phone call with nothing owed but the monthly fee. If you want service only deal with the main company with a written contract, not some local/third party installer who will say anything. And like most things if you are a long term user they will make special deals and rates to keep a good customer.

Any particular vendor? DirectTV over Dish Network? or Vice-Versa?

 

I've been with Directv for over 12 years. Go to both web sites and compare the channel lists. Directv has more of the channels I like at a lower price. I watch no sports, just stuff like NGC, Discovery channel, History channel, and that type.
