Certainly one CAN BE TOO CAREFUL, but it is important to watch those nasty little details.i recall dealing with same issue of 2N7000 a while back. different manufacturers can make products with same part number and different pinout. it is stupid but it is fact of life, therefore it is important to refer to correct datasheet. more recently i was changing one of old designs that was using LT1013 and sure enough, the pinout for SMT parts (C and D variants) changed. one can never be too careful.
