Hi,

Other then one is a diode and the other is a transistor, I am trying to understand the differences between the 2 types of opto isolators. and how you would go about using them in your circuit. What would pin B be used for?

The other type of transistor Opto isolator

 

The base connection needs a resistor to ground and the value will determine the sensitivity.

 

Two differences are:
a) Speed
b) The Current-Transfer ratio.

The (B) Pin = Base is use to control the Gain / reduce noise sensitivity

Darlington Optocouplers
Diac Optocouplers
Triac Optocouplers
SCR Optocouplers

Select the appropriate optocoupler for the application
