We have a small patch antenna, about 1-foot square. It's fairly directional but works well indoors, though I have no idea how close the transmitters are. That said; we haven't had cable in years, and don't miss it a bit! There's endless watching on youtube, amazon, netflix, etc.. and we have the antenna on one TV in the house for emergencies (hurricanes, etc..) and the occasional show that my wife just has to see.
My only major VHF station is CBS on ch12, and I could probably live without them. I guess there are a couple of stations behind me in Rockford, about 32deg off the line from Chicago. They are way at the bottom of the signal strength list though. It's funny, I have never used an antenna for my TV before. My parents got cable in 1980, and I continued that tradition from college until now. I do remember when we had an antenna in the 70s, and watching cartoons in the morning, and SNL with the babysitter. I remember UHF was always worse back then.
I get the Rockford stations. You'll be fine without them. Nothing wrong with them, but they just carry the same big networks you can get closer to home.
