Hi guys, sorry for the delay for getting back.

Okay, I see that reserving an IP address is not something that common and is a stretch to do if I have a linksys router (mine is: WRT54GS ).

One thing though, if I want my PC (which is connected to a router) to obtain an IP address automatically from the router, do the following points have tobe met:

1) Does my router have to be DHCP enabled?
2) Do I have to make sure that DHCP is installed on my PC?
3) Doesn't windows come with DHCP installed already?
4) If windows has the DHCP utility, where is it on my machine?

1) it does not necessarily need to be a router. I´ve seen network disks with DHCP, so basically any device can provide the addresses.
2,3,4) All windows are capable of obtaining ip address from a dhcp server. You don´t need to install it, you just set it up right where you set up the IP address for your network card.

 

Its so much easier assigning a static IP to your pc. Dont know why you would want to let the router reserve a specific IP for your pc. Of course it can be done. But buying specific hardware just for that. I have a very low end adsl router which is very easy to set DHCP settings.

Also it seems you are only using cmd to change/get your network settings. You aware of the network icon under control panel. You can use that for assigning multiple static addresses as well for different networks.
