That +16 volt line also directly feeds IC101, the RIAA phono preamp. Measure the DC voltages on this part -
Pin 4 should be about -16 v
Pin 8 about +16 v
1, 2, 3, 5, 6, & 7 should all be very close to zero.

If any of the pins that should be zero have more than 50 mV on them you might want to add an NJM4558 to your parts order.

 

Headphone output only? Do you get any output using speakers?

be *extra* careful not to lift any pads when you desolder the old one again

I've been using headphones as the unit is on a bench in the basement and have no speakers easily accessible. I managed to remove the old IC using a solder sucker and light use of a wicking strip with flux and only had one pad slightly lift but still usable

Checked out fine; pins 4/8 at 15.88v and <20 mv on other pins

 

Finally received a new Toshiba TC9164N (IC201) and that has fixed it – so pleased. Special thanks to YLLi, abrsvc, wayneh and all that helped me diagnose and establish the failure sources. I wish I had more of your expertise in knowing how to diagnose a circuit such as this.

Now I’m trying to fix my Sonos ZP90 (connect) that got hit with the same power surge.
