I worked for General Instruments, and visited several times the Hsin Tien factory mentioned in the video in the 1980s.

All I can say is: I witnessed first hand how hard working the Taiwanese people were and are. One had to witness this personally to really understand how come Taiwan rose from a dirt poor, backward farming island, to become one of the World’s premier technology hubs.

In Taiwan I worked with wonderful Buddhist engineers. They thought I should eat at the American food stores. I like to eat with the engineers at a Buddhist buffet. Rice was free, everything else was money/kg. The poor could get rice, water and a table for free.

There was no work at night, so I walked one direction until I reached the outside of Taipei, moved over two streets and walked back.
I remember some very nice small electronics stores.

Power supplies, fans, power-entry blocks (IEC connector, fuse, powerline filter) - all first rate. Not beefy enough for some of our MIL projects, but OK for COTS / Industrial / Medical / Telecom projects.
