I think WSL is a pretty nice feature. They supported Ubuntu a year or so ago.

I have never downloaded a MS app. I see one needs to sign in to install it. Does one need to sign in....or have ms windows OS signed in........to use it?

I downloaded and installed the Ubuntu app without having to sign in.
