Used to be done all the time with old radios also google phase locked loops.

What has been done quite effectively is to produce a small variation in the crystal oscillator frequency by connecting either capacitors or inductors in series with the crystal . The circuit is called a "VXO", and you should find a lot of examples using that name for the search.

 

I had a police radio when i was a kid and you there was a bank of crytals that you would just plug in to slots. So yeah, it's been done.

 

Can you explain in a little more detail what you are thinking of in the way of a crystal frequency engine?
