Hi agu,
Before you rubbish other countries poverty and crime levels, I suggest you take off your blinkers and look closer to home.
I did not write the Wikipedia article about poverty in South Africa.

The poverty rate in 2018 was 11% based on Canada's Official Poverty Line. This means that 3.98 million Canadians, or 1 in 9, were living in poverty in 2018.
According to the data, 1 in 9 people in Canada live in poverty. Some groups have disproportionately high levels of poverty, including, unattached individuals, persons with disabilities, children, recent immigrants, persons in sole-caregiver families and First Nations People living on a reserve.
Nearly five million people in Canada – that’s one out of every seven individuals – currently live in poverty.
Sure there are some poor and homeless immigrants and refugees from other countries here. But crime and guns are well controlled. Many people in Canada are extremely wealthy which increases the average income to make me as a retired low income senior "in poverty" when I am doing fine.

immigrants usually settle in urban areas as this allows them greater chances, opportunity to prosper and possibly connect or share support with others that arrived from same country. there are not many foreigners in the rural Canada and sadly that is where many poor live. we re talking about people that were born and raised in Canada. yes some people are rich and live large but there is plenty of those that struggle, live in dilapidated housing.

Poor foreigners in Canada? There are also many rich foreigners. They travel a lot and spread the virus all over the world.

There is a university near my home and many or most of the students are from "over there". They own and drive very expensive sports cars such as Lamborghini and Ferrari. Of course they are modified with black glass, lowered and with loud pipes replacing the mufflers.
Ordinary Canadian students do not go to this University because the foreigners pay any very high tuition fee. The foreigners also raise the cost of deluxe homes and expensive sports cars.

Nurse Katie Sefton never thought Covid-19 could get this bad -- and certainly not this late in the pandemic.

"I was really hoping that we'd (all) get vaccinated and things would be back to normal," said Sefton, an assistant manager at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan.

But this week Michigan had more patients hospitalized for Covid-19 than ever before. Covid-19 hospitalizations jumped 88% in the past month, according to the Michigan Health & Hospital Association.

"We have more patients than we've ever had at any point, and we're seeing more people die at a rate we've never seen die before," said Jim Dover, president and CEO of Sparrow Health System.

"Since January, we've had about 289 deaths; 75% are unvaccinated people," Dover said. "And the very few (vaccinated people) who passed away all were more than 6 months out from their shot. So we've not had a single person who has had a booster shot die from Covid."
Sparrow Hospital nurse Danielle Williams said the vast majority of her Covid-19 patients are not vaccinated -- and had no idea they could get pummeled so hard by Covid-19.

"Before they walked in the door, they had a normal life. They were healthy people. They were out celebrating Thanksgiving," Williams said. "And now they're here, with a mask on their face, teary eyed, staring at me, asking me if they're going to live or not."

Has it ever occurred to you that for many travel is necessary for their livelihood? Not just for your Canadian neighbors but people globally. So we should hold them accountable for working hard to put beanies and weenies on a table? Hows life in the bubble you seem to be in?

hi,
According to the latest UK figures that 3rd Booster shot is essential for protection against the Omicron variant, with 3rd shot, a figure of 75% has been stated as the protection level against serious illness.

The Omicron variant appears to more infectious and spreading rapidly in the UK.

Yes, the number of unvaccinated people is decreasing because they are dying and because many of them are getting vaccinated.
School openings and Thanksgiving get-togethers with no masks and no social distancing are probably the cause of the recent increase in cases. Only adult unvaccinated people are hospitalized and with extreme infection. The little kids who are not yet vaccinated but are infected have only minor symptoms.

Today, my area of Canada continues and strengthens the "Proof of Vaccination" passport for many activities.

That was before the Covid virus.
The beta and delta variants and almost all the new Omricon infections were brought here by travelers. They are the Super Spreaders and all travel should be banned to halt the virus.
I said "all" because some travelers were cheating and sneaking through the border restrictions.
Where will the next variant come from?

This pandemic is going to have huge consequences for most vulnerable - children living in poverty. BC has areas where this demographic reaches upwards of 30%. I live in a town that is home to one of the most rapidly expanding ports in N. America. This town is in a complete freefall deapitw the fact that billions of dollars are flowing through it. But of course those who benefit from it have the same attitude as that seen in the thread. But once all the small businesses are gone, will this just become a mancamp owned by a Saudi family?

p.s Audioguru clearly has missed the fact that modern Canada is nothing without immigrants. Perhaps we should all leave. Actually we should have never came, we should have all put the hard work we had to do to survive and thrive in this country to help our own (this of course does not apply to those who bought their way in).

it seem to be that way but at least reported cases are rather mild.

We are setup for it locally and if they develop a 4th I'm good with that too. :)

Boosters are a seat-belt for a possible next Omicron wave.

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego County man who was fully vaccinated and had received his booster shot is believed to have contracted the Omicron variant locally, county health officials said Friday.
The man had mild symptoms which have resolved and did not need to be hospitalized. He was at home in isolation as of Friday afternoon.

The first handful of omicron cases in the United States have been mostly mild, with most patients reporting symptoms such as cough or a runny nose, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The findings, published Friday, offer an early glimpse into how people might fare against the heavily mutated Covid-19 variant, now in at least 25 states, though health experts stress it's still too early to draw any strong conclusions on how it will spread in the country.

South Africa says no signal of increased Omicron severity yet
By Alexander Winning and Wendell Roelf
  • Summary
  • Omicron variant drives fourth COVID-19 wave
  • South African hospital admissions start to rise
  • But early data show no sign of increased severity
  • Majority of admissions are unvaccinated
JOHANNESBURG, Dec 10 (Reuters) - South African scientists see no sign that the Omicron coronavirus variant is causing more severe illness, they said on Friday, as officials announced plans to roll out vaccine boosters with daily infections approaching an all-time high.

South Africa alerted the world to Omicron late last month, prompting alarm that the highly mutated variant could trigger a new surge in global infections.

Hospital data show that COVID-19 admissions are now rising sharply in more than half of the country's nine provinces, but deaths are not rising as dramatically and indicators such as the median length of hospital stay are reassuring.

Although scientists say more time is needed to arrive at a definitive conclusion, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said the signs on severity were positive.

"Preliminary data does suggest that while there is increasing rate of hospitalisation ... it looks like it is purely because of the numbers rather than as a result of any severity of the variant itself, this Omicron," he said.

In the past few days, a nationwide outbreak linked to variant has been infecting around 20,000 people a day, with 19,018 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, according to data from the National Institute of Communicable Disease, but only 20 new deaths.

Infections have yet to reach the peak of more than 26,000 daily cases during a third wave fuelled by the Delta variant. read more

South Africa has fully vaccinated about 38% of adults, more than in many other African countries but well short of the government's year-end target. It recently delayed some vaccine deliveries due to oversupply as the pace of inoculations slowed.

I have to give you endless credit. Among all the people I know and not just forum wise I don't know of anyone who has done more homework and is more on top of this thing than you. Well maybe with exception of a few doctors I know. :)
