Vaccine rollout hits snag as health workers balk at shots

States have begun turning up the pressure. South Carolina’s governor gave health care workers until Jan. 15 to get a shot or “move to the back of the line.” Georgia’s top health official has allowed some vaccines to be diverted to other front-line workers, including firefighters and police, out of frustration with the slow uptake.

“There’s vaccine available but it’s literally sitting in freezers,” said Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey. “That’s unacceptable. We have lives to save.”

A new coronavirus variant has been detected in four travelers from Brazil’s Amazonas state, Japan’s health ministry said Sunday. The strain differs from highly infectious variants first found in Britain and South Africa that have driven a surge in cases in those countries.

A ministry official said studies were underway into the efficacy of vaccines against the new variant.

“At the moment, there is no proof showing the new variant found in those from Brazil is high in infectiousness,” Takaji Wakita, head of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), told a health ministry briefing.

Still, Brazil’s Health Ministry said it has been notified by Japanese authorities that the new variant has 12 mutations, one of which is also present in the variants found in the U.K. and South Africa. “It implies a potential higher virus infectiousness,” it said.

Medical facilities across Japan are struggling to cope with the recent surge in novel coronavirus infections, leaving the medical care system in many areas on the brink of collapse.

With the third wave of COVID-19 cases showing no sign of abating, some hospitals have already been forced to turn patients away or postpone stays, while others are hoping the state of emergency declared Thursday for Tokyo and its neighboring prefectures will reduce numbers in time for them to avoid similar measures.

The monthlong emergency was declared by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga the same day the capital logged a record 2,447 daily cases. Many other parts of Japan are also continuing to report record infections.

hi,

If it helps anyone to decide on taking the vaccine shot, this is the experience I have had with the Covid Pfizer vaccine.

As I am 88 years old, taking all the usual medication for my age, I was offered the Pfizer vaccination.

Had the first shot Dec 18th 2020, minor ache at the arm injection site , otherwise no problems.

Second booster shot 8th Jan 2021, minor arm and a sniffy nose for a couple of days, no other problems.

The required 7 days since that last shot have passed.

I am now advised I have 90% to 95% immunity against being seriously ill with Covid.

“A secure, convenient solution to verify COVID-19 vaccination will play an important role in accelerating a healthy and safe return to work, school and life in general,” said Joan Harvey, president of care solutions at Evernorth, Cigna’s health services business. “Evernorth is helping to lead this important work because the digital vaccine certification made possible by this collaboration will put people in charge of their own health data through innovative technology. It furthers our mission to tackle healthcare’s biggest challenges.”

“As the world begins to recover from the pandemic, having electronic access to vaccination, testing, and other medical records will be vital to resuming travel and more,” said Mike Sicilia, executive vice president of Oracle’s Global Business Units. “This process needs to be as easy as online banking. We are committed to working collectively with the technology and medical communities, as well as global governments, to ensure people will have secure access to this information where and when they need it.”

Well at 70 not sure when they will get to me. Ohio is expecting something like another 100,000 doses this week. Now even with let's say 100 distribution points that is only 1,000 doses per site. I am really not all that worried about it and sure as hell not about to get in an endless line. :)

Somehow our GP got scheduled for the mobile unit to come to their office. Which is far cleaner and sanitary than the county health clinic here. I only went into that place once for a Flu shot and turned around and left without getting it there because it was so nasty dirty and smelly...

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/202...se-more-reinfections-require-updated-vaccines
Emerging variants of the coronavirus have been in the news ever since scientists raised the alarm over B.1.1.7, a SARS-CoV-2 variant that first caught scientists’ attention in England in December and that is more transmissible than previously circulating viruses. But now, they’re also focusing on a potential new threat: variants that could do an end run around the human immune response. Such “immune escapes” could mean more people who have had COVID-19 remain susceptible to reinfection, and that proven vaccines may, at some point, need an update.

All reports of suspected adverse reactions with fatal outcome following vaccination are carefully assessed.

- The reports suggest that common adverse reactions to mRNA vaccines, such as fever and nausea, may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients, says Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency.

The large studies on Comirnaty (BioNTec/Pfizer) did not include patients with unstable or acute illness - and included few participants over 85 years of age. In Norway we are now vaccinating the elderly and people in nursing homes with serious underlying diseases, therefore it is expected that deaths close to the time vaccination may occur. In Norway, an average of 400 people die each week in nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

All deaths that occur within the first few days of vaccination are carefully assessed. We cannot rule out that adverse reactions to the vaccine occurring within the first days following vaccination (such as fever and nausea) may contribute to more serious course and fatal outcome in patients with severe underlying disease.

That is nice. Any time immune response, outcome can be unpredictable. Fever is good, but high fever is bad for example leading to nervious system and organ damage. This particular vaccine is against a low level threat (assessed on individual level) so one must weigh risks and rewards of taking it. Public health has competing interests to those of most individuals it seems. Senior citizens keep dying in BC and noone can explain why except blame the general population.

Dr Simone Gold pushing Hydroxychloroquine as a cure for Covid-19

See who is hosting her speech also!
Sounds far too conspiracy theory for me. Anything that improves and maintains a robust immune system and response will help, just like it does for any other viral infection. There's little special (causes more serious illnesses in some mainly older people) on a population average about the illness effects of covid-19 compared to similar bad viral infections, what's special is the level of contagious spread into sensitive populations. Normal flu is at almost non-existent levels nationwide even with very lax community precautions seen in several states but covid-19 is raging even in areas with very strict rules. That's the problem really, highly contagious spread with hidden symptoms, not the absolute average level of illness.

I had several courses where the discussion turned to experimental design and method vs. causality. Looking at several experiments where the design and method seemed to be very straightforward and yet the results were attributed to causes that were misinterpreted. Looking at an aged population who is already to the point where they need assisted care and trying to link vaccination and death is highly problematic and fraught with peril.
