What is the major advantage of conveyor rollers?

Interesting question for an electronics forum.

Let's see - rollers as opposed to what (what would be an alternative?). Might there be an advantage to the rollers in terms of friction?

 

What is the major advantage of conveyor rollers?

They spin around and around and around...

What would be the alternative? Maybe a belt conveyor.

 

They have low friction. So if a object landing on a conveyor rollers line, have some kinetic energy. This may be enough to move the object. On a belt conveyor every object is moved by the work of some motor.

 

Maybe they 're easier to maintain too, I guess.
