Now for rectifying the really high voltage, here is an idea, which is to use a magneticly steered arc. current in one direction would be pushed towards one electrode while current in the opposite direction would be pushed the other way. I got this idea from thinking about magnetic blow-outs on some really high power high voltage contactors we used for a project once.
