Computer ATX Power supply 8 Pin vs 6 Pin

I was looking at the power specification and pinout for the ATX 8 pin and 6 pin connector when I noticed that the connectors have the same number of +12v pins but the 8 pin connector just has 2 more ground pins but it could deliver double as much power as the 6 pin. I need someone to explain to me how this works.
