Complete Noob probably a silly question! two supplies opposite polarity running DC motor?

Electrically isolate the motor. Set both timers for 3.5 sec. pulse. Each timer drives a relay coil. Invert the motor contacts on one of the relay contacts. Now your photo board can select the proper open or close timer relay combination.

Edit: Your relays are 2 pole relays, right?

You don't need a 2 pole relay. Two SPDT relays will suffice.

you had it figured out in the very first post. Since then all you have done is to un-figure it out.
Thanks that was the push I needed couldn't see how I had gone so far off courseI at the start but I hadn't, I believe this is the solution and will try later when I get a few minutes indicating resistor led and voltage drop need to be considered properly but the general idea seems workable.circuit.jpg
