Hello all. So I don't really have much experience with circuitry. I'm more experienced with building things and adding lighting effects to them. I've been trying to make this below



still couldn't get the potentiometer to work
So I changed the timing and that seems to work fine on the breadboard, but when I transfer it to a CB it never works.


I've tried about three times now and same results every time. Maybe one of you can tell me what I'm doing wrong. This is a list of all the components. I've used the same ones from the breadboard so I know they're working.

A 555’s reset pin must be tied to V+, this is specifically important if you are using the CMOS version.
Also, while not fully necessary, a 0.01 uF cap from pin 5 to ground also helps.
Lastly, I don’t see any supply decoupling either.

 

Looks to me like all pins of the pot are connected together?
And I'm not seeing any power (ground) to the 555.

 

You have the pot wired wrong.

 

R1 and R3 values are too low for my liking.
Put 10μF/16V electrolytic across Vcc and GND.

 

Schematic shows nothing on pin 5 of the 4017, but you have a green wire on the breadboard??

 

Typical LEDs require a current-limiting resistor.

 

The MOSFET driving the LED is the current limiting resistor. Not necessarily the best practice but sometimes ok if the devices’s specifications are still met.

 

Try a 4K7 pullup resistor from pin 3 of the 555 to +5V. Just a chance that its totem pole output isn't going high enough for the 4017 to see a 1 level?
