I found an article on Wikipedia about flyback diodes, which is what came up for a search for "reverse-bias diode snubber," so I assume this is the same thing. The circuit diagram shows the diode in parallel with the L inductance and R inductor windings. Do these two together represent the solenoid coil? (If my understanding of L is correct, it's not a physical component, but rather an effect of the switching.)

A reverse-biased diode should suffice.
