cApsitor charging in intervals

Can you charge a cApsitor in intervals without discharging it each time like in the case of a ac to DC rectifier that uses a smoothing cApsitor to even out the current but instead of using a smaller farad cApsitor for charging I want to build up current in one larger farad cApsitor so without discharging it each cycle so each cycle the cApsitor builds a little more charge till it meets the voltage input requirements of a transitor in series before it discarges. Can I do this with a diode before the cApsitor so that the cApsitor isn't discharging but is feed current in intervals to build up it's charge. Thanks.

Yes. As long as there is no discharge path, you can keep adding to the charge. Of course it will never go above the peak voltage of the input.
