Usually switching losses are a high proportion of the total so modelling is essential.
As for device selection, try voltage, current, RDSON & package :)

Fast switching is essential to minimize switching losses, since it's during the transition time between on/off that much of the loss typically occurs.
To minimize that you need to drive the high gate capacitance with high current drive.

Another loss is the through the ON-resistance of the MOSFET.
.
Thus you want a MOSFET with a low ON-resistance along with a relatively low gate charge to make it easier to drive and switch rapidly.

Unfortunately both dependent upon die area in opposite directions, I hate reality, where is my perfect power mosfet :) (Actually in modelling I often use a voltage controlled switch)!
