Ok i know this thread is well over a year old but im needing to build a similar thing for my local museum. but all i need is a green light for the correct answer and a red light for the incorrect answer. (5 questions and 5 answers). i was so happy when i found the schematic that @curtschow posted but i need to know what diodes and relays i need as well as how to wire them up. the diodes i mostly understand i nust need to know what direction is which but the relay i don't know how to wire up at all. Also its probably worth mentioning that i know nothing about this stuff so it would help if you explained it in depth.

Thanks :)

Is it one question, a right answer and multiple wrong answers? (How many wrong answers?)

Or is it a many items, many possible matches (like the current thread)?

The diodes can be just about any, such as 1N4848.
The cathode end (direction arrow is pointing) is marked by a band on the diode.

The relay will depend upon the supply voltage you want to use.
You can use a battery or a wall-wort type of plug in supply.
Do you have a preference?
The relay will generally show which contacts are the coil and which are the contacts, so you just wire from that.

Note that the LEDs will require a resistor in series with each to limit the current (not shown on the schematic).

Where will you buy the parts?

the problem isnt what connectors are the coil and what not my problem is what i connect the negative positive and led wires to.
so if you could show a diagram of how i would wire up the relay that would help alot. and i find it hard to under stand schematics so maybe show the relay as a box with the 5 pins and what conects to them. that would help
and i dont know where i would buy the parts. ive never ordered stuff like this nor built something like this.

Where are you located?
I'll need some info such as how do you envision this looking?
What do you want the physical parts to look like to the user (lights, selector switches, selection of questions, etc.)?
I can help with the design but I can't do everything.

I'm in the U.S. I can deal with the design and everything myself i just need to know how to wire it up. I may use the magnet idea and have round magnets set into the board with the wires soldered to the back of them and have 2 hollow dowel rods with half inch ball bearings with a wire soldered onto them set into the dowel rods with some sort of epoxy.
I don't know if it needs to be battery powered at the moment but ill figure that out. would it be easier to use a wall outlet or a battery? with a battery i figure it would last pretty long since there is only power consumtion when you answer a question. and for the lights i was just going to use a 1 maybe 2 red and green led's and have a small plastic piece over top of them to disperse the light a little and make it look like a bigger light.

Yes, batteries should last a long time.
Lets say we go with six volts using 4 AA or C alkaline batteries in series.

Needed electronic parts:
  1. Battery holder
  2. 1N4148 diodes.
  3. Small 6Vdc relay.
  4. Red and Green LEDs (could be an RG kind with two LEDs in one package)
  5. Resistor for each LED (value depends upon LED selected).
  6. 22AWG stranded connection wire
You can buy these parts on-line from places like Mouser, Jameco, Digikey, Sparkfun, etc.

So what do you want to do next?

I guess all i would need now is a wire diagram as to how to wire it up preferably showing all 5 pin conections for the relay and where my resistors go. also do i need a spdt relay or an spdt relay?

The original design had a 15 x 15 matching design, you are looking for 5 questions with 5 answers. He also wanted the same set of lights to signal a matched pair.

Your project would be much easier with a simple pair of red/green LEDs (or even a single common cathode biColor LED) by each question and a button for each possible answer (right and wrong answers). Very simple design.

Not sure that a design with 25 buttons and 10 (or 5) LEDs is "simple".

It can be either a spdt or a dpdt relay.
It cannot be a spst relay.

The relay you buy usually has markings on the case to show how it should be wired, as seen here:

The OP's design had thirty 1/4" jacks on his 15x15 matching board and 15 diodes. That is a lot of solder joints. It all takes time and jumper wires.

The simplicity comes in the design.

Also, how will your design work with the 5 rows of questions (not a 15 x 15 matching array). Do you propose only 5 answer buttons and some type of question selector button? Or...

In the original, both the questions and answers were selected by two probes connected to Ans and Select which are used to touch conducting terminals on the board.
You touch one probe to the Question terminal and the other probe to the desired Answer terminal.
The LEDs then light to tell you if the answer was correct or not.

Thus for 5 questions and 5 answers there would be 5 rows and 5 diodes.

I think it would be more entertaining for the user to have a Green/Red LED by each question/answer pair (and a separate set of answer buttons) but at that point, it becomes the preference of the designer and customer - not for me to decide.

The owner of the museum wants one green and one red light.
I've got my shopping list made up but i need to know what type of resistor I need. im going to use these https://goo.gl/1hvW69
Also, is this how i would wire everything up(See Diagram Below)? dont mind my MS paint it was the quickest thing i could use.
Here is my shopping list.
