VLSI is a broad subject, so the book list would be huge. What particular part are you interested in?

VLSI can be sub-divided down into FPGAs, CPLDs, ASICs, and semi-custom structures. Are you interested in practical implementation or theoretical (energy band diagrams, fermi levels, etc)?

For a good general treatise of the subject see "CMOS VLSI Design" by Weste and Harris. Also see the accompanying website: http://cmosvlsi.com/ - it covers all the theory and practical circuits/programming etc.

It isn't all CMOS, but the more advanced designs focus around CMOS as the primary implementation.
