Hi,

I have been reading about using bleach for disinfecting and i found that many people were saying that you have to mix a fresh batch of bleach and water each day for best germicidal performance.
So i checked on the Clorox site, and sure enough they say to mix a fresh batch daily.
Make sense?

Also, i read now that many plastic bottles are ruined rather quickly with bleach solution in them because the spray mechanism gets damaged from the bleach.

Any ideas either one of these issues?

 

Not a chemist but it might just be Clorox wanting you to use more product. OTOH, bleach gives off a strong vapor, so perhaps it looses strength, if it is in an open container. I have a Clorox spray bottle and the sprayer definitely is non functional now. Very irritating.

Didn't know they changed the formulation for summer (more concentrated) and winter (les concentrated). At the end it is salt water.

The mistake i made was to use it on my semi-auto beer bottle filler to sterilize, the unit contained a small aluminum part.
I left it to soak in a diluted solution, the Bleach dissolved it.!

Thta's what they told us, my wife and I, back when we had to go to "home dialysis school". She needs to wipe down both her "port tube" the solution bag's ports and her machine every time she hooks up. They said for the bleach water to be effective it had to be newly mixed every time. It's a pain in the @$$, but so far it's kept her healthy and doing the procedure at home instead of the clinic.

 

Yes chlorine breaks down, evaporates and dissipates. Ask anyone who has a swimming pool.

It's them covering their a** and selling more bleach. Put the bulk of your mixture in an opaque container and store it in a cool dark place. Just like you do for your bleach.

I don't them have anything to do with it. Chemistry doesn't care about corporate decision makers, neither do viruses or bacteria.

Actually it is a fact i am pretty sure that bleach dissipates in water (and even by itself), i just dont know the actual time frame. I am pretty sure because you can use it to disinfect water for drinking.
Also, i think it turns clear and has no smell when it dissipates all its chlorine.
I have read now that even the bleach itself full strength can dissipate . It depends on temperature and exposure to light. The higher the temperature, the faster bleach dissipates even at full strength.
Clorox says that it is good for at least 6 months in most cases, but the simple test it to smell the bleach and see if it has the strong smell. You can smell it as soon as you open the bottle when it is fresh.

Wow that bites. I bet the new filters are expensive.
Do you know if it is a nano filter?

Yeah i think i read 2/3 cup per 1000 gallons which is a very very low ratio.
Yeah i would bet it is longer than a day too, but i can do some experiments to find out for sure. There is also a difference in the concentrations purchased they are no all the same i have read now.

They started making concentrated bleach a while ago; probably so they could increase the price and get people to use more without them noticing.

The same goes for a "gallon" bottle of bleach. It's not a gallon anymore. Another way they can increase price without people noticing.

For the past few years, I've noticed that bleach no longer smells like bleach. Maybe the store was selling expired stock. Who'd've thought you needed to check expiration dates on bleach?

After having to buy different brands of toilet paper, I found that most of them talk about the number of sheets on a roll; but they all use different sheet sizes. And there is a difference in quality. None of the brands we've been forced to buy since the shortages have been as good as the brand we used before.

Yeah i noticed that too it is not a gallon it is 121
