Best Budget Multimeter?

If I had to replace my 10 year old CEN- TECH P35017, I would go for the P37772 which may be an updated model. The free CEN-TECH input Z is less than 10M.
But then I frequently reach for my 1962 Heathkit MM1 analog meter, just slightly out of calibration.

Any piece of equipment has its limitations.

As it happens my wife owns a cleaning business, and I am sometimes asked to repair some of her equipment. When it is a simple leak the fix can be seen, but there are times when it does not turn on, or some function does not work.

Is the heater open or is it the thermal fuse? What is going on with the vacuum? These are questions a simple basic Harbor Freight meter can answer with ease. I'm only looking for relative measurements, is the AC voltage there or not does not depend on the exactness of the 115 or so volts I read. Same for continuity.

For 2 bucks (I didn't get the free deal) I bought a meter I can leave in her shop for the times I need it. If it gets destroyed the only hassle is waiting for another sale to travel back to HF to get another.

Sure the leads are horrible, but they work well enough for this simple purpose.

(Angelia: do NOT get this meter for your BF unless y want another BF.)

The leads are very bad other than that for a DMM you can get for free or very cheap it is OK. I recommend getting a few of them and finding the most accurate.
Best of Luck

I am sure safety is a concern for you. If your boyfriend could be measuring mains, $20-$30 is not enough to spend. There are meters for <$100 that would do but you should be careful. AMprobe is a good manufacturer. Also read the EEVblog on this topic. Good Luck

Hello

First of all, I know nothing about electronics. However, I want to buy a digital multimeter for my boyfriend for Valentine's day. He's an engineering student and his hobbies are doing stuffs with electronics -- he's not a professional electrician so I believe I won't need to buy a very expensive one. My budget for the multimeter is only ranging around $20 - $30. It'd help me a lot if you can suggest or recommend me a decent budget auto range digital multimeter. I believe the one he already has now is the manual one.

Thanks!

A 4 1/2 digit 20000 count multimeter that measures: DC and AC voltage and current; frequency; capacitance; continuity; and transistor evaluation capability is listed for $16.18 on Ebay.

such might be non surprise gift . . . consult whether he requires any . . . any way . . . just the cool card or a "souvenir" may be more valuable for gift as the device without purpose (at the worst case)
