Battery charger question

Hi all

As the thread title suggests, I'm looking for some charger advice. I have a child's electric scooter however I have lost the charger. It runs on 2 x 12v 4.5Ah seal lead acid battery's wired in series to give 24v.

I've picked up a seal lead acid charger from Maplin part no N53EC. It says it will charge 6, 12 and 24 volt batteries, when I plug the charger in to the scooter the light on the charger flashes, which according to the instructions means short circuit, reverse polarity or battery voltage too low to charge. The polarity is correct as I have checked and the batteries seem to be in good order as the scooter is working.

So now I'm stumped and am looking for advise.

Thanks

Huh. What voltage do you see on the batteries, when the charger is connected but complaining? Check them both separately and in combination.

I'm getting 12 volt from one and 10.9 from the other so looks like I have a duff battery would you say?

That's with the charger plugged in

Well I wouldn't expect that to stop the charger, but it's a clue. They're both discharged and the low one might be toast. Try to give it a nice long charge on the 12V charger. I wouldn't charge them in series until they're both looking similar.

I'm writing this while charging my tractor battery so I can get back to mowing. I have a 4-yr old grandson that loves to get on the tractor and I suspect he turned the key and left the ignition on. Stone cold dead. Wouldn't even start charging until I briefly jumped it with my car. I guess I'll have to remove the key from now on.

Don't you love kids haha, my daughters the same.

I've got it on charge by itself so we'll see tomorrow, I think I'll charge the other battery the same way then wire them back in series and plug the charger in again just to be sure.

Fingers crossed

Thanks everyone
