Hi.

Can someone explain how anautotransformer taps?

I understand there is a single coil on a core, then depending on which output leads along the coil you tap from it will dictate what the voltage will be, tap down or up. But I don't understand the reference to a series coil I have seen in many explanations?

What is the series coil, is it just a coil involved with the tapping mechanism?

Ok. In the example of a regulator as shown in the diagram below, it would appear that the output voltage is being tapped at a point in between the series and the shunt winding, is this correct? How does that work, or is the diagram misleading?
