I am trying to modify an audio circuit. it is a portable radio/mp3 player. the volume is setup with a button to turn the volume down and one to turn it up. i would like to take these off and add a potentiometer, any help on how to do this would be appreciated

 

The button is probably a digital input to a chip, so one approach would be
to break the analog signal path and wire pot into that before amp to
speakers. Then use button to set volume to max, and control with just
the pot.

Sorry for taking a while. Here is a picture of the volume buttons I would like to switch to a potentiometer

 

It looks like a scanned digital input, so without a complete
schematic/chip part number list, I think it would be very
impracticable to implement conversion.
