Never used one, but pretty simple, as far as I can tell.

Looks like an IIC interface, or a minor modification thereof.

 

Looks very simple to bit-bang the display.

One problem some of them have is with the recommended RC filters on the data lines. As I recall, on the TM1637 modules I got, the caps oversized by a couple orders of magnitude, killing the data signals.

The TM1638 seems to be a little easier to use (less non-standard interface), provides 8 digits × 10 segments, and can read a matrix keyboard.
